Ben Chetland

Specialist Nuerological Occupational Therapist

Ben Chetland is a Specialist Neurological Occupational Therapist with over 8 years of experience in neurological rehabilitation within both the public and private sectors. He graduated from Oxford Brookes University in 2016 with a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy. Ben is registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and is a member of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT).

Ben has honed his expertise in neurological rehabilitation for over 15 years, starting in a therapy assistant role before becoming a qualified Occupational Therapist. During this time, he has gained experience working with individuals who have neurological conditions such as Stroke, Acquired Brain Injury, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinson’s Disease, in both acute and community settings.

For the past five years, Ben has worked in a specialist vocational rehabilitation service within the Buckinghamshire NHS Trust, providing individual and group therapy for people with acquired brain injuries whose goals are to return to work or seek new employment. In this role, Ben has built upon his knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • Assessing a client’s occupational performance and participation through complex task analysis of their daily living activities and work-based tasks and routines.

  • Collaborative goal setting that ensures a person-centred approach to individualized rehabilitation programmes that address the occupational needs of a client.

  • Restorative and compensatory approaches to upper limb, cognitive, and functional neurorehabilitation for clients living with neurological conditions.

  • Symptom management incorporating strategy-based rehabilitation to support clients living with long-term neurological dysfunctions.

  • Vocational rehabilitation that helps clients prepare for work by developing confidence in their ability to perform work tasks.

  • Providing recommendations to clients and their employers on grading a return to work following long periods of sick leave and specific reasonable adjustments to help with reintegrating back into the workplace.

  • Employment redirection and careers advice to help find new employment by utilizing the client’s previous work experience and their current skills and abilities.

  • Application of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Motivational Interviewing skills in all aspects of his practice to support clients in living a values-based life alongside their neurological condition.
